The Salmon-Trout River in northern Marquette County has been named America's fourth most endangered river. That's according to a list that was released Wednesday by the group American Rivers.

It was nominated because some environmentalists say the proposed sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plans could contaminate the Salmon-Trout.

"What this nomination does is raise awareness about the issue," says Carl Lindquist of the Watershed Partnership. "Obviously there's a lot of local attention and some statewide attention. This brings it to more of a national level and even an international level when we're talking about the potential impacts on Lake Superior."

Officials of Kennecott Minerals, which is proposing to develop the mine, insist they will take all precautions to avoid any environmental damage.
