The agriculture appropriations bill approved last week by the U.S. House includes funding to battle the rising double-crested cormorant population, allocating $300,000 to control cormorant numbers in Michigan and Ohio.

“Fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts know that the double-crested cormorant has caused severe damage to fish populations,” U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, said when announcing the appropriation. “This funding will help our region continue efforts to address this problem.”

Last month, Stupak sponsored a separate bill to increase funding for cormorant control and to study the cormorant population, determine the full extent of the problem and develop a comprehensive, regionwide solution.

On the state level, the House approved a bill last week that provides $150,000 to the DNR for cormorant control efforts.

“The cormorant has plagued our waterways for years, especially in northern Michigan,” Rep. Gary McDowell, D-Rudyard said in a press releases. “Its increased population has caused a massive decline in our fish population. ... These funds will help the DNR control these nuisance birds and replenish our fish stocks.”
