Feds to treat Lake Michigan tributary to kill lampreys PDF

Wildlife officials are preparing to treat a northern Indiana stream that flows into Lake Michigan with chemicals that kill the larvae of fish-killing sea lamprey.

 Beginning Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will begin applying a lampricide to sections of Trail Creek to kill sea lamprey larvae.

Authorities say sea lamprey larvae live in some Great Lakes tributaries and eventually become adults that migrate into the Great Lakes and kill fish.

A single lamprey in Lake Michigan consumes about 40 pounds of lake trout and salmon during its life.

The treatment on Trail Creek is expected to destroy an estimated 5,000 larval sea lampreys.
