Anglers and boaters in Lake Huron should again be on the lookout for tribal commercial salmon fishing nets. Jennifer Dale, spokeswoman for the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority said that the nets will be out until the end of October.

She said that each net has large orange floats that are spaced at intervals of 300 feet or less.

“The license of the tribal fisher is on the net and ends are marked with five-foot staffs above the water surface that have a 12-inch orange flag on top,” she explained.

She said that the nets may be set at the surface and are made of thick twine.

On Lake Michigan, the nets will begin at McGulpin Point in the Mackinaw City area to Seven Mile Point near Cross Village.

The nets will be located from Cordwood Point to the Hammond Bay Harbor Light in Lake Huron, she said.

“The nets will be hard to see in low light or in poor weather conditions,” she said. “We are urging boaters to navigate around the nets they encounter, rather that between the staff buoys set at net ends.”

She said that fishers from the Bay Mills Indian community, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Little Traverse Bay Band are all required to uniformly mark their nets.

She added that posters that show what the nets look like, the general areas they will be set and contact numbers are posted at several launch areas.
