The man set out from Grand Haven, Mich., about 5 p.m. Thursday, according to a Coast Guard news release, and was scheduled to paddle into Milwaukee today about 8:30 a.m. The trip covers about 76 miles.

But, facing dehydration, he activated his emergency positioning beacon around 10:30 a.m. He spotted a commercial vessel but as he tried to signal the ship he lost his balance and capsized, the Coast Guard reported.

The ship contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and Station Milwaukee responded. The man, whose name was not released, was found about 30 miles out from the station.
