A fisherman died and two other people were treated for hypothermia after treading water for more than 90 minutes when their boat capsized and sank in Lake Ontario off Port Credit, near Toronto.

Rescuers say the three were wearing overcoats when they were pulled from the lake yesterday, but didn't appear to be wearing lifejackets.

The 55-year-old man from Georgetown, Ont., was in the grasp of his 27-year-old son when another fishing boat happened upon the scene a kilometre offshore shortly after 11 a.m. That fisherman immediately radioed a distress signal, which was heard by other boaters and police who converged on the scene.

They found the man, his son and the son's 23-year-old girlfriend near where their boat had filled with water and quickly slipped beneath the waves.

The son and girlfriend were being treated for severe hypothermia at a Mississauga hospital.
