City to replace fixed docks at marina PDF

The Grand Haven City Council has agreed to replace the fixed docks at the Municipal Marina during the first phase of a $2 million improvement project to the facility, reversing a decision it made this summer.

In July, the city council debated whether the fixed or floating docks should be replaced first. During that meeting, the council opted to replace the floating docks in 2008 and the fixed docks in 2009.

But the council was cautious about its decision and asked city administrators and project engineers to re-evaluate the facility to make sure the fixed docks could last two or three more years. That review happened in September, and led city administrators to a new recommendation -- the fixed docks should go first.

City officials say the fixed docks, which are 35 years old, are slipping into disrepair and a harsh winter could render some of them unusable.

With the council's unanimous vote Monday to reorganize the project, the fixed docks will be replaced prior to the 2008 boating season; the floating docks will be replaced the following year.

When the project is completed, the marina will have 67 slips.

The city has received a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and approval of a second $1 million grant is pending. The way the grants are structured, the most the city would have to contribute is $1 million, or 50 percent of the project, over the next four years.

The first phase is expected to cost $1 million. The existing fixed docks will be demolished and replaced. New electrical hookups and a concrete sidewalk will be installed.

The fixed docks will be built with slips 45 to 60 feet apart, creating enough space for larger boats, officials said. The design meets state DNR standards for slip widths.

The most expensive part of the project will be the installation of $500,000 worth of new pilings for the floating docks, city officials have said. The wooden pilings help anchor the docks and keep boats from damaging them.

When the project is completed, the walkway for the floating docks will be extended 170 feet, officials said.
