Lake trout action on Lake Michigan has picked up significantly this past week. Nice catches were reported along the outer wall of the Port of Indiana in 14 to 30 feet of water, with the artificial reef being the top location.

The breakwall in Michigan City also has been producing lakers in 27 to 44 feet of water. Top lures have been spoons and body baits.

The chinook salmon run is winding down, with just a few chinook being noted in DNR creel surveys this week. The coho run, however, remains good in the mid to upper sections of Trail Creek and the east branch of the Little Calumet River. Spawn, night crawlers, spoons or spinners are being used.

Fresh winter-run steelhead trout were noted this week along the mouth of Trail Creek in Michigan City. Anglers fishing along the pier, near the Coast Guard Station and by the DNR Building have been finding shrimp fished under a bobber a good choice.

Partially due to weather conditions, inland angling action has been slow. With the water temperature cooling, bluegill are more scattered as are crappie.

Also, as lakes begin the process known as "turnover," look for fish in deeper water.

Reports from Salamonie Reservoir on the eastern side of Indiana indicate that both crappie and channel catfish action remain good.
