Grand Haven, White River good hot spots for anglers PDF
Muskegon Chronicle

Fair to good catches of whitefish and menominee continue to be taken from the channel walls at Grand Haven. Most of these fish are being taken during daylight hours, but those fishing after dark have had some success along the south side of the Muskegon Channel and from either side of the White Lake Channel.

Single boiled salmon eggs, wax worms and acorn grubs work well on the menominee and whitefish, but jigging spoons such as the half-ounce Lee's or the Swedish Pimple (No. 5 or No. 6) works well after dark. The whitefish run is still in the early stages so look for the action to get better over the next couple weeks.

The lower Muskegon River below U.S. 31 has been generally slow for steelhead, but better catches are being made upstream from Newaygo. The White River has been very good this week as several limit catches have been taken from the area downstream from the North Branch and from the area between Pines Point and Taylor Bridge. Although most of the fish are being taken on spawn, lures such as the X-5 flatfish have been very effective as well.

Trolling (Flatfish or Willy's Worms) also can be an effective presentation for steelhead. Pentwater Lake, White Lake and Muskegon Lake are all worth trying -- especially near the river mouth.

The channel walls at Grand Haven and White Lake, the south breakwater arm at Muskegon and the surf have all produced a few steelhead this week, but the action has been inconsistent.

The "night-bite" for Muskegon Lake walleye has been inconsistent. Last weekend, several anglers took limit catches on body bait lures such as the Rapala Husky Jerk or Rapala X-Rap. Then two nights later, while casting in the same area, not one fish was hooked.

White Lake has been generally slow for walleye anglers, but a few nice catches in the 15-19 inch class, along with a fair number of undersize fish are being taken from Hardy Pond during daylight hours. Crawlers and leeches on lead-head jigs work well.

The panfish action has been generally slow on White Lake, Mona Lake and Muskegon Lake although a few gills in the 6-7 inch class have been taken from deeper waters with wax worms being the preferred bait.

Congratulations go to Andrew Lynch for taking first place in the Michigan Anglers Association River & Surf tournament. Lynch checked in with a three-steelhead limit weighing just under 25 pounds. All of his fish were taken from the White River. Randy Thorstenson took second place, and big fish honors, with an 11-pound, 7-ounce steelhead.
