Lake Erie - Fishing Report PDF
The Plain Dealer

For a change, the weather is cooperating with anglers, with a weekend forecast of good fishing weather. Steelhead trout fishing has been fair to very good on the local rivers and streams as the waters settle and clear. Walleye are being caught after dark all along the Lake Erie shoreline, and especially in the Cleveland area.

The recent rains and high water have steelhead trout sprinkled throughout the streams, including the Rocky River. The best fishing has been from the boat-launch ramp up to the Lagoon Dam. The Grand River had been dingy but is clearing and should be in excellent shape today. The Chagrin River trout fishing has been good.

Spawn bags and jig-maggot combos worked along the bottom under a float have been producing. Fly fishers have been casting egg patterns, smaller nymphs, sucker spawn and small streamers. For the latest stream flows, visit waterdata.usgs.gov/oh/nwis/rt.

The Cleveland Lakefront State Park piers and breakwalls have been crowded with walleye fishermen after dark. Surprising numbers of big walleye have been caught the past few nights. Night-bite anglers also are catching fish in the Lorain and Sandusky areas, the Huron and Lakeside piers and Catawba Island State Park.

Suspending minnow-style plugs have been a good bet for walleye, with black-silver or blue-silver combinations, and perch colors and the clown pattern are working well. Anglers also are trolling the shoreline after dark with excellent success. The Gold Coast west of Cleveland and the shoreline from Huron to Vermilion have been the top spots.

The best fishing has been provoked by northerly winds. Unfortunately, south winds are in the weekend forecast.

Breeder trout have been stocked at Punderson Lake in Geauga County, giving anglers an opportunity for trophy rainbow and golden trout.
