It's shaping up to be a long sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago. At the close of spearing hours on Sunday, only 355 of the prehistoric beasts had been taken from the lake. Another 236 have been speared on the Upriver Lakes.

Registration stations recorded three fish over 100 pounds Sunday, with the largest a 111-pound, 72.5-inch female speared on Lake Winnebago by Mike Freund of White Lake.

Sunday's take included 27 juvenile females, 66 adult females and 69 males on Lake Winnebago for a total of 162 fish. On the Upriver Lakes, 18 juvenile females, 7 adult females and 65 males were harvested for a daily total of 90.

At this rate, the season isn't expected to close anytime soon, said Ron Bruch of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The maximum season length is 16 days.

The Upriver Lakes season is expected to last at least through today, and possibly several more days.

Harvest caps on Lake Winnebago are 445 juvenile females, 500 adult females and 800 males. Harvest caps on Upriver Lakes are 111 juvenile females, 56 adult females and 200 males. The season ends when 90 percent of the cap in any of the categories is reached.

Factors impacting spearing Sunday include fewer spearers on the lake, fish movement and decreased water clarity. Ice conditions remain good, although spearers are advised to use caution, especially near cracks, according to the DNR.

Spearers hope warmer weather forecast for this week will help increase fish movement, the DNR said.
