Ohio officials are looking into whether to warn winter fishermen about unsafe ice.

Some kind of warning system might have helped prevent 130 ice fishermen from getting stranded off Lake Erie last month. Right now, there are no such advisories in Ohio.

State representative Dennis Murray says someone has to be in charge of saying when it's safe to be out on the ice. He says he might propose legislation that would create such a system.

Some authorities along Lake Erie think a warning system would have stopped some anglers from venturing out in early February when winds and warming temperatures made the ice dangerous.

The U.S. Coast Guard spent $250,000 to rescue the fishermen when the ice broke apart.
