Two area children's fishing derbies have been planned for this weekend, which offers free fishing for adults on Michigan waters.

Saturday kids' events are planned at Henry Lake near Marenisco and at the Ontonagon Harbor marina.

Both Michigan residents and non-residents can fish Saturday and Sunday without purchasing licenses, although all normal regulations will apply.

Michigan has offered free fishing weekends since 1986 and kids' fishing events have recently been initiated to coincide with the special weekend.

"Many seasoned anglers view Free Fishing Weekend as a time to introduce friends or young people to angling. Mentoring others helps ensure Michigan's conservation heritage is passed along to future generations," said Rebecca Humphries, Michigan DNR director.

John Pagel, Ottawa National Forest fisheries technician from Bessemer, said the Ottawa Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Wal-Mart are also hosting the area fishing derbies for kids and their families.

The contests will run from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Food, prize drawings and fun contests are planned, including a Zebco Kids Casting Carnival. Every child who catches a fish at the derbies can enter an "I Caught A Fish" national drawing.

Children will receive free goodie bags containing the "World's Greatest Fishing Tips for Kids" waterproof tackle box guide, a colorful souvenir fish ruler decal, bobbers and other give-aways provided by local and national sponsors.

Youngsters may register at the derby from 7:30 to 8 a.m.

All children must be accompanied by parents or guardians.

"Spending a day fishing with a child can create memories to last a lifetime," said Pagel. "Besides being a wonderful experience for youngsters, the derbies are an excellent bonding activity for a community," he said.

The Ontonagon Riverfest is also sponsoring the Ontonagon event.

A third derby is planned for the same time at the Lake Ottawa Campground in Iron River.
