PETA wants to take the Alaska state fish off dinner plates.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says catching and eating Alaska king salmon should be illegal. PETA sent the request to the governor's office this afternoon, saying fish are intelligent and feel pain.

Murkowski's spokeswoman Becky Hultberg says the request is propaganda and that PETA is out of touch with reality.

The Department of Fish and Game officials say about 800,000 king or Chinook salmon were caught in the state last year.
