A South Carolina man was jailed Wednesday after a traffic stop when Michigan State Police troopers found trout in the truck he was driving that the suspect allegedly had caught illegally at the Oden State Fish Hatchery. According to the police, troopers on patrol noticed a vehicle pull out of the fish hatchery on U.S. 31 around 2 a.m. Tuesday. The truck subsequently was stopped for a motor vehicle violation. While speaking to the South Carolina resident, troopers noticed blood on his leg. In the bed of the truck, they found a sweater with blood on it and 17 brown trout under the sweater.

State police said the suspect admitted to fishing in the hatchery and was lodged in the Emmet County Jail for operating without a driver's license and DNR violations.

As of today, Thursday, an Emmet County Sheriff's Department employee said the suspect has been released on bond. A 90th District Court employee said no proceedings have yet been scheduled, noting the court has not received paperwork on the suspect.
