Somewhere in the depths of Lake Michigan are $15,000 worth of swimming prizes.

The Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sport Fishermen is sponsoring its 31st annual Salmon Derby, July 2-4, based out of the Manitowoc Marina. With good weather, Fred Schnell, co-chairman of the derby, said he anticipates as many as 700 anglers will compete. Prizes are awarded for largest fish in each category (coho, rainbow, brown, Chinook and laker) and the most pounds of fish for the Tri-Sport Super Tournament on July 2. The super tournament is a one-day event based on who nets the most pounds of fish.

Several charter captains tested the waters on Wednesday; each boat brought back fish.

The derby begins in the early morning hours on July 2, and ends at noon on July 4. Entertainment begins on Friday and continues throughout the event at the Manitowoc Marina.

The event will also feature a Kid?s Fishing Derby on July 2. Registration starts at 7 a.m., with the contest to follow from 8?10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for different age categories and fish types. Worms will be provided.

Tickets to compete in the Salmon Derby can be purchased at various sporting goods stores in the area and Gander Mountain in Sheboygan.
