The seventh annual Cheboygan Salmon Tournament will be held this weekend and more than $13,000 in prize money is set to be given out.

The tournament officially begins at 5 p.m. Saturday with captain check-in under the big tent at the soccer fields at the Joseph F. Doyle Memorial Recreational Area on Lake Huron in Cheboygan, said spokeswoman Brenda Bruce.

A buffet dinner provided by the Great Lakes Grill is set to begin after the 6 p.m. captain's meeting on Friday. Captains will receive four dinner tickets when they register. The public is welcome to join and can purchase dinner tickets for $9 per person, said Bruce.

Entertainment under the tent by Rawhide will be from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Beer, soda and food will be sold under the tent and outside beverages will not be allowed, she said.

The fishing will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday with a shotgun start on the Cheboygan River, she said. Boats are due back in the harbor by the 2 p.m. deadline and weigh-ins begin at 1 p.m.

Rules and entry forms are available at the Outdoor Adventure Store or by calling 627-5273. Participants can register early at the store until 2 p.m. Friday. All captains must be registered by 6 p.m. Friday.

Last year, 113 boats participated in the tournament. John Weber of Pinconning was the winner with a five fish total of 59.51 pounds.

Prizes include $3,000 for the boat with the highest total fish weight and prizes will be awarded up to 20th place. The largest salmon prize is $1,000 plus a free mount by Migda Taxidermy. Prizes for largest steelhead, lake trout and brown trout are $300 each.
