Walleye numbers in Lake Erie are back to the glory days of the late 1980s, and the quota for sport and commercial fishermen will be 70% higher this year. This week, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission set a total allowable catch of 9.886 million walleyes for 2006, thanks to a maturing 2003 year-class that has boosted the population. |

Walleye fishermen who were all set for the annual spring run to begin in the Maumee and Sandusky rivers have had to put their plans on hold. Before last weekend’s deluge and the drastic drop in temperatures this week, conditions were about right for the spawning run to begin. Anglers were beginning to take walleyes and some males in the three- to four-pound range. |

Two young anglers unofficially have opened the "season" on walleye in the Maumee River, as each of them caught a large female fish over the weekend. Thirteen-year-old John Spurlock of Maumee landed a 9-pound, 11-ounce, 27-inch walleye on Sunday, fishing near Jerome Road. |
