The man in charge of all U.S. Coast Guard activities on the Great Lakes was in Grand Haven Tuesday morning to explain a reorganization of the unit that will take some personnel out of Coast Guard City USA.

Rear Admiral Bob Papp told a group, made up mostly law enforcement officials and city leaders, that because of new responsibilities since September 11, 2001, the Coast Guard is putting in a new, more efficient command structure to cover the Great Lakes.

The move will take 14 dispatch personnel out of Grand Haven and move them to Milwaukee. Eventually, what is known as Group Grand Haven, will become a field office of the new district based in Milwaukee, and be called Sector Lake Michigan.

The transfer of personnel is still at least a year away. Even after that happens, Papp says Grand Haven will play an important roll in the Coast Guard's presence on Lake Michigan, as the amount of patrols and boats out of the city will not be affected.
